Indie games have a rocky history with Microsoft and the Xbox brand. The Indie Games channel on Xbox Live remained buried deep within the dashboard on Xbox 360, and the unveiling of the Xbox One did little to persuade small studios interested in self-publishing. But on Thursday, Microsoft announced a partnership with indie-friendly game engine and developer toolkit company, Unity Technologies.
Unity Technologies offers a popular set of development tools, plus its Unity engine, in both free (non-commercial) and Pro versions. The "strategic partnership" will also offer free Unity-developed tools for Xbox One to any creator working with Microsoft Studios. According to Unity's David Helgason, the joint venture will create new opportunities for game development on the Xbox One.
"We want to provide the best engine in the world," said Helgason. "And an important dimension to that is opening up as many avenues as possible for our developer community to find success."
