Minecraft: Xbox 360 Edition was updated with the 1.8.2 patch on Tuesday which brought many new features and mechanics. Since this is the most significant upgrade to the sandbox title yet, we've provided a guide of tips and tricks to help get you started on your way. While this isn't a complete list of everything in the massive list of changes that came with the Minecraft 1.8.2 update, we think this is enough to get you exploring with the new options quickly. View slideshow: Minecraft: Xbox 360 Edition - 1.8.2 Screenshots MOVEMENT Dash/Sprint - To sprint, double-tap the left analogue stick forward. Clicking the left stick will not allow you to sprint. Flight - To fly in Creative Mode, press the jump button (A) twice. Once in the air, you can fly up or down by using the right thumbstick to control your altitude and your left thumbstick to control your direction. You can move slowly up or down by using the D-pad or fly faster by double-tapping the left analogue stick forward. COMBAT You can charge your bow by holding down the right trigger for more damage. Holding down the right trigger when wielding a sword will case your character to block. Blocking reduces any damage received by half but causes you to move slower than when you sneak. Critical hits quietly made their way into the 1.8.2 update as an unannounced addition. You can throw a critical hit by attacking something in mid-air or while sprinting. You'll know when one of your blows does extra damage by a sparkling effect. STARTING NEW WORLDS When you start a new world, you'll now see an options button that contains a list of host options on what other players can do and what features the world will have when it is generated. Player vs Player - When enabled, this allows for players to harm one another. Trust Players - Keeps visiting players from building or destroying your Minecraft world unless you give them permission to do so. Fire Spreads - Allows fire to spread across the world unless stopped by the player when enabled. Fire will stay localized to the block that is on fire when it is disabled. TNT Explodes - Either allows TNT to blow up when enabled or doesn't allow it when disable to keep griefers from destroying your work of art. Host Privileges - When enabled, the host can toggle other player's ability to fly, disable exhaustion, and make themselves invisible. The Host Options menu can be accessed by pressing the back button in-game. Generate Structures - Creates villages and the like when checked. Superflat World - Creates a completely flat world. Ideal for Creative mode. Bonus Chest - When enabled, a chest containing some useful items will be created near the player spawn point. CREATIVE MODE As mentioned before, Creative Mode allows players to express themselves in the game by building or doing whatever they want without having to worry about the survival elements. Almost all blocks are now available in a tabbed interface divided between Building Blocks, Decorations, Materials, Food, Miscellaneous, Redstone & Transportation and the all-important Tools, Weapons & Armor. Flight is available in this mode as well. You can switch between Creative and Survival mode for your worlds by going to the main menu and loading the world up in whichever world you prefer. Just be aware that doing so removes you from the Survival leaderboard and places you on a separate leaderboard. TUTORIAL WORLD 4J Studios has expanded the Tutorial World for Minecraft: Xbox 360 Edition to show off more information about all the new features available. You can also find brand new Easter Eggs if you hunt around thoroughly before exiting. HUNGER The Hunger mechanic is all new to the Survival mode with the 1.8.2 update and completely changes how you need to manage your character's health. You'll notice a new bar of what looks like turkey legs to the right of your health bar. Each leg represents two points of hunger for a total of 20 points. In order to restore health now, you'll need to keep your hunger bar at 18 points or more. Your health will regenerate at about half a heart every 4-5 seconds at that point. If your health dips below six points you will no longer be able to sprint. When your health hits zero, you will begin to lose health. Different types of food will refill your hunger bar at different rates. Cake is king with 12 points refilled while steaks, cooked porkchops, mushroom stew and pumpkin pie are not far behind at eight. Consider creating pens to herd pigs and cows together so that you can create tasty meat out of them later. You can also find seeds to create a garden to grow melons and pumpkins. You can eat items such as raw chicken or rotten zombie flesh in a tight spot but you run the risk of poisoning. This will last for 30 seconds and you'll lose additional points on your hunger bar. The effect does not stack though so you can eat more bad food if you are already poisoned. NEW STRUCTURES AND TERRAIN Abandoned Mineshafts - Just as the name suggests, these are mines pre-carved into the game world and they can stretch for miles in all different directions to create a maze and intersect with ravines and caves. You're also likely to find Cave Spiders lurking about the there are rewards to be found such as diamonds, Lapis Lazuli and other rare items in chests. Consider marking your path and repairing the minecart rails to help in your explorations. Ravines - These are narrow chasms that cut 30 to 50 blocks deep into the earth. While this is a great way to get down to the bedrock quickly, you'll have to carve out a staircase to get down safely. Or, you can just jump down the waterfall for a safe landing. Maybe a not so safe journey back up though. Strongholds - Only three Strongholds are generated per world and are typically large underground structures with multiple rooms and corridors of varying size with different themes - Prison Cells, Libraries, Storage Rooms, and rooms that act as junction points. Like Abandoned Mineshaft, chests with rare items can be found but be careful when mining around them as you may accidentally crack open a Silverfish egg. Villages - Quaint little towns that sprout up around your Minecraft world full of houses plus usually a blacksmith's, a butcher's shop, a church, farms, a library and a village well. Unfortunately, villagers are not included in the 1.8.2 update. Mountains - These are large hills with steep slopes that have been moved to the Extreme Hills biome. They were previously common in other biomes. Oceans - Huge expanses of water larger than the sea. You can find ravines and abandoned mineshafts at the bottom. The ocean floor is also a good source of clay. Rivers - These bodies of water now can run through maps and separate one biome from another. Though there is no current, these are ideal spots to find clay. Swamps - These areas can be recognized by the vines growing up up trees and trees sitting in shallow pools of water. Mushrooms are abundant here along with sugar cane. NEW MOBS Cave Spiders - These deadly spiders are smaller, bluer and faster than the regular spiders found in the overworld but are much more difficult to take on. Typically found in Abandoned Mineshafts, they can poison you with their bite and are not slowed by cobwebs. Think twice before taking them head on and be sure to look for the monster spawner surrounded by cobwebs. You'll want to destroy that if possible. Endermen - These creepy mobs are three blocks tall and like to steal your blocks but don't attack unless provoked. The catch is that just looking at an Enderman from the waist up can provoke it. Endermen can be valuable for the Ender Pearls that they drop but they can be difficult to catch with their ability to teleport so hit them in the legs to help prevent them from zipping away. You can also track them after they teleport by the glowing trail they leave in the air. Silverfish - These tiny creatures flick about and are generally harmless until you disturb them by cracking open their eggs by digging. The eggs reside in blocks that look like Stone, Cobblestone and Stone Brick blocks in strongholds. They are not especially dangerous by themselves but they can awaken other Silverfish in nearby blocks if disturbed. This swarm of aggravated creatures can be deadly so be careful when breaking blocks in Strongholds. You'll know if a block contains a Silverfish if it is taking longer to break than normal blocks. EXISTING WORLDS The new gameplay mechanics such as sprinting and hunger will be a part of any world you created prior to 1.8.2. However, new structures and terrain features such as Strongholds, Ravines, Abandoned Mineshafts, Villages and Rivers only have a chance to be created in parts of the world that have not been explored yet. If you've already explored your pre-1.8.2 world to its fullest extent, you will not see any of the new terrain features.
