How the Betrayl and Team-Mate Damage system should work in Halo: 4.
fzdw11 replied to Archangel Tyrael's topic in Halo 4
Because taking friendly fire off brings up a whole new set of issues. So now, instead of being careful with that rocket launcher, you see two teammates fighting two enemies in close proximity, you fire the rocket, get two kills, and your teammates live. There's no consequence for firing a rocket into melee's anymore. No consequences for grenades being thrown into melee's. While it solves the betrayal issue, it does bring up more issues on its own.- 67 replies

But that's the beauty of implementing both systems. You betray for the flag/oddball/whatever, you're still getting banned at some point. Now the weakening thing, that's a whole other issue dealing with friendly fire. Reach had the protector medal. What about modifying it slightly so that if somebody is shooting the flag carrier/oddball carrier, you get it instead. Protecting a team-mate who has the objective then adds value to performance. I still think the game needs to keep friendly fire in, though. Taking it out leads to even more issues, but it does fix the betrayals.- 67 replies

Losing skill is a problem few have, and it is generally caused by not playing the game. As for being carried to a higher rank, personally it needs to be more than just wins that help you advance. Wins + Performance would be the most balanced. Wins would get you so far, but if you're performance isn't up to scratch, that's that, you're stuck at a certain rank until you really improve your skill at the game. And performance can be more than simply kills vs. deaths. Objectives can play a major role as well, kill the flag carrier? Helping your team win is a good performance. Flag captures? Same thing. Oddball time? Great. Hill time? Wonderful. You don't do any of those? Well, what are you doing for your team? But this is off topic. Back to the betrayals & booting. The problem is, any system that we can come up with, there isn't any mercy for accidental betrayals. A computer program cannot determine what was an accident or not. It's just not possible. Currently, quitting gets you banned for 10 minutes. Is a 10 minute ban enough? Maybe you take the deranking idea from my earlier post, and apply it to quitting games. You quit 5 games? 10 minutes. 10 games? 20 minutes. Etc.- 67 replies

Prove that it couldn't happen with bloom. But seriously now, look, I understand where you ZB people are coming from, I do. But you're riding a dead horse, really. Halo 4 is coming out this year. We've seen some gameplay footage, and so far, haven't seen bloom. Isn't that what you wanted?

But is it worth it? That's gonna put strain on the engine, keeping track of exact damage output from every person throughout the game.

This is true. Unless you always match players against what their highest rank ever was, regardless of what it currently is. Thoughts? How is stopping people from betraying, or trying to limit them betraying, restricting peoples freedom at actually being effective? I'm just curious, because it makes no sense to me. How is betraying a teammate effective at all?- 67 replies

It's an interesting idea, but something I think that would be difficult to keep track of. If you're team shooting an enemy, then every single bullet needs to be tracked in order to know who it came from.

What about this. You keep the automatic boot after two betrayals, removing the ability for the community to be boot happy. You also add in a deranking process that gets progressively harsher the more you betray. For example, 10 betrayals you lose a rank (be it a True Skill rank of 1-50 or a physical military rank like Captain). You hit 20 betrayals, you lose 2 ranks, and every five after that, you lose a rank cumulatively (25 and you lose 3, 30 and you lose 4, etc. etc.). Thoughts?- 67 replies

How the Betrayl and Team-Mate Damage system should work in Halo: 4.

I don't think adding all of that together would make a good system, though. The rebounding damage is a good idea, but it hurts the accidental sniper shot or the stupid player running into a thrown grenade. Not rebounding damage off of power weapons or grenades is pointless. If it's one weapon, it needs to be all weapons. The auto boot after 2 betrayals, while it would work, there isn't any mercy with it, and accidental betrayals are still punished by being booted. Not counting towards the teammates score (deaths), and they betrayer themselves taking -1 kill and +1 death, is that punishment enough? Are people going to worry about K/D so much in Halo 4? So that basically says, while we came up with a bunch of ideas, they definitely need more refinement. What about a system where betraying deranks you? That may work, like Carts suggested.- 67 replies

The problem doesn't fall squarely on the betrayals, though. Like I said in an earlier post, it comes down to the community and the boot option. There are people that boot for any betrayal, regardless of how it happened. What you're saying also doesn't cover something like Constantly said. If him and his buddy are betraying each other for the fun of it, not caring about the lone player left on the other team, is it fair for them to get banned? Or how about a tank shot that misses a vehicle and flies another 100 feet before hitting you, is it fair for the driver to get banned because of an accidental shot that wasn't intended to hit you in the first place? The betrayal system needs to stay the same, period. It's the boot system that needs an overhaul.- 67 replies

Bungie day will always hold a place in everyone's hearts, but given time, 343 day may be just as good and just as fun.

Understandable, Constantly. I wouldn't want to get banned for that either. But at the same time, if a random walks up to you, shoots you point blank with a shotgun, and you don't get an option to boot, does it upset you? Or how about spawning next to a teammate, only for them to immediately start firing on you and kill you? While betrayers are going to betray, like you said, the problem isn't what you and your buddy are doing. The unfortunate thing is that any betrayal system would apply in that situation as well, because any program written cannot identify what is an accidental (or in this case, intentional between two friends) and an intentional betrayal. While I could understand leaving the system alone entirely, there are always going to be people who complain.- 67 replies

Welcome to the forums! The teaser trailer showed Master Chief using some form of thruster pack designed for space use. And yes, the back of the Spartan 4's have something on them, but there's no video showing one using a jet pack. Could just be an attachment on the armor that serves no purpose, or like the Chief's, is a thruster used in a Zero-G setting to make minor adjustments in trajectory. As for not everyone using proper grammar, is it really that difficult to at least attempt it? And why shouldn't somebody expect respect? Yes, everybody is different, but that doesn't make somebody better than another. Not showing respect is a way to not get any in return. Also, claiming to have "proof" and then not sharing it doesn't help us out, Project. So yes, put a link to the video, please. Would love to see where this Ranking system "proof" is from.

I agree with Zamio on this, I think he was saying that if the games stayed the same, then it would be going down that road. As for the Halo 5 comment, I agree with you Shock, no need to announce another Halo (even though we know its coming) when 4 hasn't even been released yet.

Here's a question for you people against this. I haven't played BTB heavies yet, so I don't have first hand experience. But, is there a tank for every person to get into? How about a guass hog? Or even just a regular hog? And how often do they respawn? The point is, there are going to be times when a vehicle isn't available. What are you supposed to do at that point but not be on foot? And not giving people who don't have access to a vehicle at that moment a chance to defeat a vehicle is a good thing? Just some food for thought.

Have to go with voting. Absolutely better than Vetoing and getting stuck with a worse map and gametype.

I used to, until I lost the power cord for my original XBox (caused after a new TV purchase and moving stuff) and the game was inside. Tried prying it open to no avail, but this was shortly before Anniversary came out, so I wasn't terriblly upset.

No, you're right, a year of Live is down right cheap compared to other subscription services. I fully support the whole work/get a job of some kind. And judging by the OP, I'd say anyone who argues that he may be too young to get a job is just wrong.

How the Betrayl and Team-Mate Damage system should work in Halo: 4.
fzdw11 replied to Archangel Tyrael's topic in Halo 4
You've got it. The whole point of friendly fire is to prevent actions like you've stated. If there's no consequence for shooting a rocket into a teammates battle, then that's all we'd ever see, and that's not a good way to play the game. Like I stated, the easiest solution is to remove friendly fire, but you've pointed out exactly why that's not the right solution. The betrayal system isn't what needs an overhaul, it's the boot system, and even then, there isn't any clear options on how to proceed, and that's based more on the community than anything else. You have players who actually take a moment to think about how the betrayal happened, and if it was accidental, they forgive. I'm one of these players, if I get the option to boot, I always look at how it happened. If I feel it was accidental, I'll let it go. But if I respawn next to you and you immediately start firing at me and kill me? Not so much. On the other hand, you have players who automatically just hit the boot buttom, regardless of how the betrayal happened. The best solution would be to make it an automatic boot, and don't let the players have a choice. One betrayal on the game, you're put onto a probation. A second betrayal, and you're automatically booted out, no choice on the player's part.- 67 replies

I think he's looking for more of the 1 or 2 day passes that certain games (like Mass Effect 3) have been giving out recently, not a full blown 1+ month pass.

Alien vs Predator used 1st person assassinations, and it was horrible. You couldn't see what was going on around you, so anytime you did an assassination, you were in turn assassinated by a guy that was waiting behind you 9 times out of 10, and there was no chance at all of you reacting because you couldn't see him there. A button to switch between them would be fine, but I personally say stick with the 3rd person view.

How the Betrayl and Team-Mate Damage system should work in Halo: 4.
fzdw11 replied to Archangel Tyrael's topic in Halo 4
But on the flip side of this, how is it my fault if I throw a grenade into a room that's filled with enemies and no teammates, only to have a teammate run in and get betrayed by the grenade? While granted, it wasn't intentional, should I take the damage because of their stupidity? Same goes for the sniper. If I move and happen to get in the way of his shot just as he's taking it, that's my fault, not his, so should he take all of the damage? While you're stopping the people that betray intentionally, you're only hurting the accidental betrayals, and while even accidental betrayals hurt a team, I'd much rather be betrayed by a stray grenade toss than a member of my team shooting me point blank with a shotgun anyday, and no system can determine if something was an accident or not. While the whole betrayal system sucks and the easiest solution is to remove friendly fire, is that the right solution?- 67 replies

But at the same time, while some of the AA's were definitely unbalanced, you can't say that this is what Bungie was going for. They definitely were not intentionally unbalancing the game, regardless of how it turned out. I hope that whatever 343 does works, and is a smooth system, but when you add even little things for customization, it can have unintended consequences.

I'll agree, distance is definitely a factor. But you hit the nail on the head with your final comment. Who knows how 343 will implement sprint? They may do a fantastic job, and the game will be better for it. It's not really something we can judge until we play the game.
