Simple, there is a country that has been thrown into war because of the quarrels of the major houses. Because of the actions of some members of each house, the king has been succeeded by his young son, which causes many to try to seems to the crown themselves. After reading the first book and then watching the first season, I have found that mapping out what is happening and knowing who is who is much more difficult in the show.

Yes I also heard the books hold much more detail than the show and that they don't show a lot

there are lots of underlying events in the books which help the story out alot
