The first Borderlands wasn't exactly family-friendly, and the original was "toned down" in certain countries to reduce the gore factor. So it's definitely good news that Borderlands 2 will be going out uncut all around the world. Hopefully Zed will be making a return to hack some more limbs off.

"Do you live in Germany?" Gearbox asks in an official post. "Australia? Bandits will be just as likely to explode into bloody chunks of awesomeness as they will be in Canada or England (which is to say: very likely.)"

There'll also be a "gore toggle" to turn off all blood and other violent effects for the sensitive among us (although what you're doing playing Borderlands in the first place is beyond us).

Borderlands launches Sept. 18 in the US and Sept. 21 internationally.

  2. Ukranian blogger claims Elder Scrolls, Fallout publisher acquires rights to develop and publish entry in post-apocalyptic shooter series, despite GSC retaining partial license.

The S.T.A.L.K.E.R. series may move into the house that built Fallout and The Elder Scrolls, if a new report proves accurate. Ukranian blogger-marketer Sergey Galyonkin--who reportedly accurately predicted the demise of S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 earlier this year--now claims in a new blog entry that Bethesda has acquired the rights to develop and publish a S.T.A.L.K.E.R. title.

Galyonkin writes (via Google Translate) that he has heard from a "very reliable source" that GSC Game World CEO Sergei Grigorovich has not sold the brand to Bethesda entirely, but will allow the publisher to develop a game set in the action-shooter universe.

Under the reported stipulations of the deal, Bethesda has picked up the rights to a game, with Grigorovich holding on to the rights for everything else (books, movies, and merchandise), though that could change.

A Bethesda representative told GameSpot, "we don't comment on rumors and speculation."

Earlier this year, developer GSC Game World was shut down, with S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 being canceled outright, despite efforts to keep the project alive. A spin-off studio--Vostok Games--rose from the ashes, and is now working on Survarium, a near-future game coming to the PC next year.

The S.T.A.L.K.E.R. games are centered around Chernobyl, which suffered a nuclear reactor meltdown in 1986. In the original game, the town is subjected to a second dose of nuclear fallout, spawning a rash of hideously mutated monsters. GSC Game World released two follow-ups to the original game: Clear Sky and Call of Pripyat.

The PEGI rating system for age classification of video games in the U.K. has become law from today, making it illegal for retailers to sell games to anyone under age.

The law enforces the PEGI standard on all retailers across the country and completely replaces the old BBFC ratings, which will no longer be used. Anyone found to be selling games to anyone under age will face a £5,000 fine or up to six years in prison.

“The U.K. has one of the most dynamic and innovative video games industries in the world, and the games they produce not only entertain millions, but can also educate and foster creativity,” said U.K. culture minister Ed Vaizey. “Today’s simplification of the ratings system benefits both industry and consumers and will help ensure that the millions of games sold in the UK each year are being played by the audiences they were intended for.”

In real terms not much is going to change for customers, there will still be age restrictions on games, the only difference is that the ratings will be decided by a different system.

EA and DICE revealed details about Aftermath, the upcoming Battlefield 3 download content scheduled for release this December. Aftermath includes four urban warfare maps, earthquake damaged terrain, new military and civilian vehicles, a new game mode, and new assignments, achievements, and dog tags.

Set amongst the shattered districts, streets and surrounding villages of a post-earthquake Tehran, Battlefield 3: Aftermath depicts a continuing struggle for supremacy and survival amongst the devastation. With operational capacity severely compromised the opposing forces must adapt and engage in vertical and horizontal urban combat amongst the dust and rubble with cracks and fissures in the terrain providing unexpected cover and paths to objectives.

Additional support comes in the form of heavily modified troop transports and civilian vehicles specially adapted to deliver deadly force to the enemy.

Aftermath is one of several download content packs for Battlefield 3. Back to Karkand was available in December last year. Close Quarters came out in June, Armored Kill is coming in September, and End Game is coming early next year.
