The elites joined the Humans out of necessity, they pretty much lost everything in the split, so it would be completely understandable for elites to leave the truce with the UNSC purely out of hate. (only some of the elites not all)

Hey guys the reason i have been off lately is due to my laptop cord breaking. I have ordered a new one and it should be here in a few weeks hopefully (its coming from the UK). Until then the only time i can get on is at school when its possible. Im soooo sorry guys, i hope you can understand.

I dont see how the MC survived on Requiem if he was there for a year, unless cortana found several edible plants and animals and he made a wooden shelter XD, more likely he was there for a few days before Infinity crashes, OR the MC causes the portal which pulls the Infinity in (or the Storms)
