    I'd go with it symbolizing death. Mortality is something people fear universally. To be honest, when I first saw it, I thought that knights, having sophisticated technology, could maybe see the skeletal structure of threats, and ultimately mimic them for intimidation purposes. I don't know. Whatever the reason, it's downright BA.
