Greetings. I see you have stumbled into this thread. You might be asking yourself "What is this thread? Why'd I click it?". Why? Because you read the title - you read 'A Side-Scrolling 2D Horror' and it happened to tickle your curiousness. Continue to run your eyes over these words, to find out more... What is 'In The Blind'? Well you see, I decided to begin developing an indie game. So, some people jumped aboard the game train and decided to join me. A handful of these people are probably online right now, on this very forum. We have D-38 Boss, Muse, SykoWolf, Self-Destruct and Bnus currently in on this. That's not all, however, oh no, we have music producers such as the great Akmigone and amazing artists such as Olliban. We hope to develop a creepy, scary 2D side-scrolling horror game. Has it been done? CAN it be done? Well, personally I haven't seen many that have accomplished this, although games like Nihilumbra, The Swapper and The Lone Survivor pull of very creepy atmospheres. We're taking hints from them and other games, to hopefully develop a title that is emotional, awe-inspiring and keeps you from closing your eyes at night, all within the 2D genre. So I've rambled on for a good half of this thread - you probably just want to see the good bits. The details. The facts. The pictures. We only started this yesterday, yet we already have quite a bunch nailed down. Here's the basic gist of it: Thousand of years ago, parasites were presumably bigger, with the dinosaurs. Throughout events such as the ice-age, these large parasites became frozen in the ice, most commonly found in the northern regions of Earth. In 2070, Global Warming has caused the ice to melt, letting the larger parasites out to spread. Years gone by and slowly the population decreases. The sky is dark, even at day, where the thousands of spores form dark clouds. How do the parasites infect you? What do they do? Well, it just so happens that there is in fact a parasite that is transmitted via spores from plants. These spores attach to the eyes of the host and eat away at them, causing the host to be driven insane through the pain and lack of sight. You have people recently infected, unable to see, but still moderately in control of themselves. However, when you can't see, you don't know where you're going. What you're doing. Everyone's too focused on their own survival to help you. When you're blinded, you come into contact with other parasites. Perhaps the sacculina, causing you to think you're something you're not. What about the Leocochloridium Paradoxum, a parasite that takes components from one host to replace with another's. Maybe the Horsehair Worm, re-programming your brain to make you walk into a body of water and drown yourself? The scariest part is, these are all REAL parasites. Just in our game, they're much bigger, which ultimately means bigger hosts - like humans. In the game, you play a 16 - 19 year old teen/young adult. You don't know what his name is, he is simply known as 'The Survivor'. He's the immediate reflection of yourself. The decisions you make with NPCs during game, should be what YOU would do in this scenario and will directly impact your survival - for better or worse. The game is set in the 2070s, over 60 years since the outbreak, in between the Canadian and New England borders. You barely talk to anyone - only your dog. You don't necessarily know what all these viruses are and what they do, as well as how you could catch them, so you use your smartphone - a crucial component to the game. If you don't have a torch, you need to rely on your crumby phone camera. Now, we've done something a little different. You'd think that moving at day would be the best option, yes? No, that's when the parasites come out - they're attracted to light. It may SEEM safest, but that's when they're most active. You need to move at night - trying your best to resist the urge to shine a light. You might want to crack a glow stick though, they won't attract attention. Anyway, these parasites cause extreme mutations. Avoid contact with parasites at all costs. Here, we have some concept art of some of the infected we have in mind. Our idea is that there's 3 stages - first, the host is blinded. Once blinded, they come into contact with other parasites, causing mutations such as Elephantitis. These parasites deform the host, making them unfamiliar as humans. All the infected hosts develop large bubbles of their inner fluids, to make room for the parasites. This is the beginning of stage one. The later stages are hosts that have come into contact with more than one type of parasite. Yes, this will be a very... graphic game. Not for the faint of heart. Anyway, here is the concept art done extremely well by our very own, Self Destruct: This is still very much in development. Any suggestions would be VERY much appreciated.
