So I'm not sure if we have any fellow duders out in the forums, but if people don't know, I write some reviews for a website called www.giantbomb.com and I wrote one on Far Cry 3. It's pretty short and succinct, but they're my thoughts on the game.
And my favorite game of the years is Far Cry 3. I'm definitely more of a gameplay trumps story kind of guy (not that I should have to choose), and in some ways Far Cry 3 makes me choose, but in others, it really doesn't. The opening scene with the montage of the kids being pretentious pricks is pretty awesome, and it makes it even crazier when you realize you're just watching the phone which Vaas has. Speaking of which. Vaas is my favorite character of the year, no questions asked. "I like this phone. This is a nice ******* phone." For one reason or another, that specific phrase just brought me into his character, and he is easily my favorite of the year. Unfortunately, Far Cry 3 kind of makes it a weak ending. On the upside, the gameplay is great. I've never felt more badass than when I stab a guy, whip around and zap two people with my bow, then set a group of buffalo wild on the rest of the pirates in an outpost and I get that XP bonus for no alarms set off. The shooting feels very good, the travel is never dry, which is great (especially for an open world game) due to the lush forests and all the crazy animals and the interactions they have not just with you, but with each other. I mean, I saw a tiger chase down a buffalo, and I couldn't stop smiling. Maybe that's just saying something about myself... anyway, I love the environment and the feel of the game just as much as I enjoy the story, which left me a little bit frustrated. I am by no means a fan of open world games, but the way that Far Cry 3 handles the travel and the potential monotony of trudging from one radio tower to the next is great. I mean, even the radio towers are fun to climb because they are, in essence, each a different platformer.
