no it does not need to be pinned! there are many similar threads to this. the boltshot is strong but limited to it's range...i hate that thing and don't even use it myself. most of the time when i get killed by it is when i stupidly chase my oponent around the corner and so deserve it. the needler is fine the way it is. other points brought up are rather minor annoyances.
