So, for those of you with a PC and Steam. (and who actually read these. ) I've decided to review a free-to-play game on the steam market that I believe deserves a good try.
APB: Reloaded
Now, APB: Reloaded is a remake of the Ill-fated APB, a subscription based MMO-shooter Produced by Realtime Worlds, the company behind Crackdown.
Then, on September 16th 2010, They announced the servers would be shut down. The game had been panned by Critics, largley do to the unrefined driving and shooting controls, and the backlash from the developer denying any reviews until a week after release.
Then, a glimmer of hope! A company known as K2 Network purchased APB, and announced that a free to play remake would be released, under the Title APB: Reloaded.
The story takes place in a city dubbed San Paro. Where crime isn't just a problem, it's a menace. The city is practically helpless to stop the gangs of the city. Then they enacted the City Security Act, an act which allowed any citizen with a gun to sign up with a Law enforcement agency, take to the streets, and take out criminals of any kind. From vandals to murderers, anyone was open game, and there was no bag limit. Thus, the Enforcers were born.
Players start by picking a side, Crim' or Cop, as they are referred to in short, and you make your Character. Now here is where APB stands out. It's character customization is amazing. The amount of, for lack of a better word, Crap you can do with your character is astounding, making every single character unique. you start with a basic outfit, but as you complete a few missions, more clothes can be unlocked. These range from specifically designed clothes, to templates to make your own, using the extensive graphic designer.
The customization doesn't end there. You can create your own Graphitti, customize a Car, right down to the sound the horn makes, customize tactical gear, and even make a song to play when you kill a player.
APB's major selling point is it's customization.
Gameplay has to basic modes.
Action districts are Plain old PVP. Shoot them, get shot by them.
City districts are objective based games in a large environment. Objectives can range from holding a hill, to tagging graphitti (or covering it, if you're a Cop.) to escorting a car, to raiding apartments. All the while, you and your gun happy comrades blast away at your opposition.
You advance in the game by "Pledging" to handlers from different orgaizations. On the Enforcers, The Praetorians and the Prentiss Tigers will be your main source of work. On the Crims', The G-Kings, and Blood Roses will send you out to do damage.
Now, playing as Criminals and Enforcers is obviously different. And actually, it is harder to play as an Enforcer, but you level up quicker.
Criminals can gain extra experience by mugging civilians, While Enforcers get massive bonuses by using non-lethal weapons to arrest criminals. That.... is..... HARD.....
Criminal players know they are worth big cash and standing if they get arrested, so they tend to arm up with shotguns to keep Enforcers out of Tazer range, but non-lethal guns are available too. they just kinda suck.
Gameplay - The problems that plagued the original APB have all but disappeared. the game plays a lot better, but rewards a good computer and a fast connection. The extensive character customization will keep you playing for a long time.
Graphics - The graphics are pretty good, but still retain a little bit of an animated style.
Sound - The gun sounds are passable, and the cars engines all sound different. The sound track is good, but only comes into play in the Waterfront, (The social/shopping zone) And when you are in a car.
Community - Some of the people on here are fun to talk to, but there are a lot of people who are really unsavory characters. Don't take this to heart though. it's the same everywhere else.
Final rating - 8/10. A fun game, a good time waster, and hey, It's free.
See ya next time!
