The Old Republic 'might fully adopt free-to-play'BioWare must be flexible with pricing systems, developer claims.

The Old Republic may be an entirely free-to-play game if market demands dictate, a developer at BioWare appears to have claimed.

Falling subscriber numbers for the Star Wars MMO resulted in publisher EA offering a free introductory trial to the game, yet BioWare lead designer Emmanuel Lusinchi believes that further business model options are still being considered.

"The MMO market is very dynamic and we need to be dynamic as well," Lusinchi toldGamesTM.

"Unless people are happy with what they have, they are constantly demanding updates, new modes and situations."

He continued, "So we are looking at free-to-play but I can't tell you in much detail. We have to be flexible and adapt to what is going on."

The article appears to have been removed from GamesTM's website, though its quotes have been widely circulated.

An Electronic Arts spokesperson was unavailable for comment.

The Old Republic launched last December, and quickly amassed 1 million subscribers after just three days, eventually settling on 1.7 million after a couple of months.

Yet just months later subscriptions for the game fell to 1.3 million.

EA said the decline was due to non-paying subscribers who ended their trial periods.
