Unless they are only charging for the disc. Even then, they are losing money. And I have gone years without live before. It's not the worst thing in the world. Now, SO is free, but for Gold members. Having access to a whole extra campaign seems nice for only the price of live. Heck, we went through Halo 2 and 3 with no extras. not even firefight. They added all this extra gameplay and I think a few extra bucks isn't a lot to ask. BTW, if it costs $100 a month for live there, Halo 4 would cost $600 for the standard edition, yes? I think that's a bit of a hyperbole. I can't think of any place with an economy that bad that has internet access. FireFight was free for all and accessible to all. Spartan Ops, while very cool, is a marketing scheme by M$ to make more money off of people, especially by adding achievements to every season of it, so if you want the cheevos, you have to buy... While Microsoft are enjoying that this will of course increase Gold Subscriptions, keep in mind, these are given to you over Xbox Live. The Halo 4 disk is running tight on room as it is, packing a month or so would make you go onto two disks. Spartan Ops is just transferred over live as to not take too much room. My point is that Microsoft does not need to force people to have gold before buying DLC it in no way stops them from being able to deliver the content to the user. By trying to squeeze money out of people this way many people won't bother at all because they will have to pay for two things instead of one. But no saying a 2nd or further season of Spartan Ops wouldn't be a paid per play release. I've personally no issues with buying a years worth of XBL even though I basically just play halo on xbox now. There isn't Internet access all over the world that has a good enough ping for gaming. My mate only lives 10 minutes away but his only option is to use satellite Internet for his Xbox so he lags far too much to play anymore. I however has a ping to most servers at less than 100.
