Xbox 360 Input Lag on HDTV.

Recommended Posts

Here's the deal:

I have an older Xbox 360 (white with 30GB HD) that has the trapezoidal shaped output for either Composite or Component. I have been using it via Composite (red/white/yellow) on an SD TV (480i) for some time now due to ease of use.

With Halo 4 coming out soon, I want to play it on my 55" HDTV (Sony Bravia model# KDL-55ex710) for the full effect. I transferred the Xbox 360 over and ordered an HD Component (red/white/red/blue/green) cable since my older model doesn't have an HDMI output. I popped in Reach, and the resolution and image of it looked quite wonderful. It was running 1080p no problem. The only problem is that there was about a 0.5 second input lag with the haptic feedback. I pressed the A button, and my Spartan jumped 0.5 seconds later. It was extremely agitating.

I switched back to my SD TV since there is input lag whatsoever, but now yearn to play on the HDTV for Halo 4 due to the amazing graphics, larger TV, and, I mean, come on, it's a 55" HDTV.

My question is: what can I do to reduce or completely eliminate input lag on the HDTV? From the research I've conducted so far, I've found that a "Game Mode" on the HDTV eliminates a lot of the background video processing, but my Sony Bravia doesn't have one. I've also asked myself if upgrading to a new Xbox 360 (black one) and use the HDMI output (since it's a digital cable instead of optical) would reduce or eliminate the input lag, but have found that that wouldn't produce a noticeable difference.

Does anyone have any suggestions or methods that they use personally? I would love if an avid techy could supply some recommendations!

P.S. The Bravia has 120Hz Trumotion, if that tells you more about the refresh rate.

TL;DR - How do I eliminate input lag on an HDTV for gaming?

Try using a shorter HDMI cable(if possible)

I hook my Xbox through my sound system and then my tv, so I can hear, because my tv speakers are dead. HDMI works fine with the tv, but no sound, but HDMI lags through the sounds system, so I play using RGB, but it works well enough.

As I said, it's an older Xbox so it doesn't have an HDMI input, only the trapezoidal shaped input which I use Component RBG/RW through.

Go into your Xbox's settings and reduce the setting that controls quality(1080p,1080i,720, etc...)

So you're saying if I hook everything up again and choose a lower resolution, such as 720p, the input lag won't be as noticeable compared to 1080p? I haven't tried that yet, but it sounds like a viable option...I'll post ITT when I try that later tonight.

UPDATE: Although my model is out of production, I finally found it's Specification page and found out that it actually does have a Game Mode. I'm going to try that out tonight as well. Also, what do people feel about VGA adapters?

There is little you can actually do to eliminate all of the lag, because it is a physical necessity.

All t.v.'s will lag to some degree, the lag is noticeably less on an SD tv because it doesn't do alot of background video processing, but quality is crappy. With more quality comes more processing and more time to put it up to the screen, the lag usually isn't a humongous deal, because most of the lag occurs between the controller input and the action on the tv, not the consoles output to the tv.

It might be that the TV isn't ideal for gaming. For gaming you want to make sure it has a low refresh rate, like 5 ms and lower.

Well it does have a "game mode" but it only turns it down to like 40ms input lag. I'm just going to game on my SD TV for now and eventually buy an ASUS monitor when I buy a new Xbox too. Whateverrr.

Go into your Xbox's settings and reduce the setting that controls quality(1080p,1080i,720, etc...)

I did notice a pretty large difference between 720p and 1080p, but unfortunately it was still too much to allow me to play (especially since I'm extremely OCD when it comes to this matter).

Thanks for all the suggestions guys, enjoy your "likes" :)

  • 4 months later...

just got vga cable for xbox 360 to test with on panny plasma gt series 2k12 and from what i researched 30ms was the input lag via hdmi on game mode however when i used PC VGA connection the lag went away, i know because i bought the ut and it had 16ms lag i was happy but wanted a bit brighter so got the gt and was about to hold off for the st 60 which i was hoping would also have 16 lets just say ill be keepin my gt idk how fast it is but playin gears i could tell the difference majorly only downside was I had to sacrifice some resolution, barely noticeable 1366 X 768 wide and i noticed there was a major change in contrast but it was no different then on my lcd monitor the marcus on the gears cut scene is completely visible with out so much shadow detail as it was via hdmi I feel like this is totally worth the drop in lag as I'm sure the ST would have been quite a sacrifice in overall features from the GT I dont usually post so if I name dropped too much my bad but i think i got room to talk after goin through like 10 tvs before i was satisfied, must say best tv i've seen no led/lcd could make me happy this is the one for the money get one while you can and good luck with whatever happens in 2k13 if you decide to wait it can only get better right?

try using hdmi and as well any hd tv you play video games on you need to turn the game mode on or it will lag horribly so check your tv for a "game mode"  it should be under tv setting if your tv has it not under the picture though that will have a "game" setting that only effects the picture not the tv ability to process hd video games if your tv doesnt have it im sorry to say you are sol
