Welcome to the THFE competitive forge tutorials thread. Here you will find tutorials from the basic to the advanced, covering all aspects of Halo 4's forge in the realm of competitive map creation. These tutorials will be split among three tiers and rolled out over the next days and weeks. Each video will be accompanied by a text description to provide additional insight into the design process.

Tier 1: The Basics

Here you will find basic tutorials on how to set up your map in its base form, from setting up gametypes to building a spawn system.

  1. Competitive Tier 1 Hub

  2. How to set up Capture the Flag

  3. How to set up Dominion

  4. How to set up Extraction

  5. How to set up King of the Hill

  6. How to set up Oddball

  7. How to set up any other game modes

  8. How to set up ordnance drops

  9. Spawning (Initial spawn points, respawn points, respawn zones)

Tier 2: Basic Design Principles

This is where you'll get into the nitty-gritty of how to design and plan your map, from designing encounters to planning out areas.

  1. Competitive Tier 2 Hub

  2. Designing an experience (what kind of map, how many players, etc.)

  3. Risk vs Reward (balancing areas, routes, sightlines, and weapons)

  4. Designing playable spaces (number of ways in and out of an area, amount of dance floor, etc.)

  5. Planning player movement (flow, routes, basically putting 1 and 2 together, also basic objective design)

  6. Incorporating vehicles (infantry vs vehicle areas, circuits)Design Concept

Tier 3: Advanced Design Concepts

This tier focuses on more specific areas which will be more helpful to forgers with a bit more experience.

  1. Competitive Tier 3 Hub

  2. Planning ordnance (what weapons to have, how many, and where)

  3. Planning objectives (what type of objective modes suit a map, where to place objectives and how to design attack routes and defensive positions)

  4. Planning vehicle balance (what vehicles to use, what weapons to use to counter them)

  5. Incorporating low gravity zones

  6. Testing

Stay tuned for the tutorials (the first ones will be posted November 6th). keep in mind that this list is subject to change, but this will be the general format. Feedback and discussion is welcome!
