Much of it requires the careful consideration of battle types (ship-to-ship battles, ground battles, etc…) as each race is/was strongest in it's own field. But according to the Halo novel Cryptum, the Forerunners lost the vast majority of ground battles when they were trying to halt Human expansion in the galaxy all those millennia ago (similar to how the UNSC was stronger on the ground than the Covvies). Unfortunately, by defeating Humanity, the Forerunners sealed their own fate at the hands (tentacles?) of The Flood, which Humanity had been successfully defeating as it attacked Human worlds. The Forerunners were destroyed by their own hubris, their own beliefs… just like who? The Covvies. The Forerunners, the Covvies… Both were technologically superior. But neither one was the race of warriors that Humanity is and had always been in the Haloverse. And Fortune favors the bold, so maybe Humanity just got lucky? Well, "Better lucky than good."
