The differences between Spartan IIs, IIIs and IVs?

In regard to "what program produced the best Spartans" its a little broad. I would have to say the Spartan II are the best currently. Due to experience and and somewhat illegal and risky Augments. I believe the spartan IIIs did get augments, but they dint get the more "controversial" ones (may be outdated because I remember reading something about how the UNSC might have overcome them). so in terms of physical stuff the spartan 2s are better (but the 3s MAY have gotten more "upgraded" arguments). Also to note is I believe the spartan 3s were smaller physically.. but that may have been due to the armor. In regard to the spartan IIIIs... Probably similar to the spartan 3s considering the used adult volunteers and even allowed other Spartans IIs to join. So either the 4s have more advanced (or overridden) arguments or a "spartan" 4 is more of a spirited thing.

From the halo wiki (for MJOLNIR armor)

Created alongside the SPARTAN-II Program,[3] the MJOLNIR Mark IV Armor was a radical redesign to previous powered exoskeletons, streamlining their design into a practical purpose for use in the field. The brainchild of Dr. Catherine Halsey, the Mark IV represented her vision of creating a powered exoskeleton capable of taking full advantage of the physical capabilities of a SPARTAN-II.[3] The MJOLNIR battlesuit is constructed in overlapping layers. It is a sealed system, capable of extravehicular activity or operations in toxic atmosphere and vacuum. It is hardened against EMP and radiation, and has filters that are completely effective at removing toxins and bacteria from local atmosphere.[4][note 1][5]

The armor's shell is composed of a multilayer alloy of remarkable strength which has been augmented with a refractive coating capable of dispersing a limited amount of Covenant energy weapon strikes.[4][6] The suit contains a gel-filled layer underneath a thick black armored bodysuit. The gel layer regulates temperature and can reactively change its density in a few seconds.[4][6] The inner skinsuit is made of a moisture-absorbing synthetic material linked to an environmental control computer and the occupant's UNSC-issue neural interface.[4][6] An upgrade to the standard Neural Interface is issued to all high ranking officers; another modified version of the neural lace is issued to all SPARTAN-IIs in the UNSC as well. This network translates electrochemical signals to digital code and routes them through an interface connection at the rear of the skull.[4] Through this interface, the user's thoughts command the armor's movement and weapons and input from the on board sensors comes directly to the user's mind.[4] The synthesis of machine and mind is so fast that it is almost impossible to chart the reaction time. Unfortunately, the system is so reactive that normal human beings cannot use the suit without injuring or even killing themselves.[7] Only humans who have undergone carbide ceramic ossification, a bone-strengthening treatment from the SPARTAN-II augmentation program, have been shown to safely operate the suit.

Sandwiched between the external armor and the internal padding is the most devastating weapon the suit carries: a layer of reactive metal liquid crystal.[4] Woven by molecular tools into a superdense layer, this layer is amorphous, yet it amplifies force, doubling lifting capability and increases reaction time by a factor of five.[3] Such technology did not exist when work began on the Mark I prototypes.[3][8]

Because of these advancements, the design is more akin to an actual suit of armor, as opposed to a powered exoskeleton; the user moves the suit, and in return the suit moves the user. This allows for an incredibly compact design when compared to other combat systems. The armor contains numerous features including an integrated computer system which continuously monitors weapons, biological functions, and a "smart" motion-sensing radar. The suit also contains a built-in oxygen re-breather system that can provide air for up to ninety-minutes.[5] The suit's helmet also features imaging and video recording, and thermal sensors among other features.

In its final phase the MJOLNIR battle suit weighs half a ton,[9] or 1000 LBs and when in use, is a fully neural-linked system and is currently the most advanced piece of tactical military hardware in human hands.[4]

That should be all the info you need on that...

The GEN2 is probably more advanced tho.

From halo waypoint

"With the addition of SPARTAN-IV super-soldiers into the Office of Naval Intelligence’s expansive military scheme, the Materials Group has spearheaded the next generation of Mjolnir Powered Assault Armor, officially dubbed ‘GEN2.’ Now produced by half a dozen military and privately contracted manufacturers, the newest format of ONI’s prodigious armor technology comes with ad hoc modification systems, which, in addition to Armor Abilities, allows for Tactical Packages and Support Upgrades. These enhancements give Spartans the opportunity to improve their combat performance as well as personalize their actions in the field."

From halo wiki -

Aesthetically, GEN2 differs from GEN1 in its streamlined edges, pronounced power pack design and increased customization options.

With regard to armor customization, MJOLNIR GEN2 boasts a greater degree of modularity, with alternative helmets, shoulders, chestplates, legs, forearms and visors available. Moreover, SPARTAN-IVs are able to tune their armor using Tactical Packages and Support Upgrades to better suit operational requirements.

So it seems to imply that GEN2 MIGHT be better. But overall its just a crap load more customizable with better headgear... as well as greater modularity.

Any other questions?

Great question! I'll begin with the Spartans themselves:

SPARTAN IIs were given:

-New bone material composed of carbon and ceramic, making bones almost unbreakable. No major side effects observed.

-Drugs that increase the body's production of enzymes responsible for the creation of muscle tissue, causing muscles to be larger, more dense, and more tightly woven. If you don't get the scientific jargon, this drug makes muscles really powerful. Side effects include Parkinson's and Lou Gherring's disease and cancerous growth in muscle, all of which were observed in multiple Spartan II canidates.

-Drug to enlarge the retinal fluid in the eye, allowing for perfect vision, even at night. No serious side effects reported. All Spartan canidates given this drug showed a change in eye color, often to abnormal colors.

-Drugs to increase the speed of reflexes. Known to cause temporarily and sometimes permanent blindness, excessive shaking, and shutdown of certain parts in the nervous system.

As a result, Spartan II's are faster both physically and reactivly, have incredible eyesight even in the dark, can lift almost three times their body weight, have strange eye colors, repressed sex drives, unbreakable bones, and can take a lot of damage that would otherwise kill another human, and allowing them to wear MJOLNIR Armor. However, all these enhancements did cause thirty of the original 75 SPARTANs did not survive the augumentations, and twelve were permanently crippled.

Spartan III's differ:

Spartan III's were given these enhancements:

-The same bone material given to Spartan II's.

-A degree of the reflex and muscle enhancing drugs, but not as much as Spartan IIs to avoid death or other side effects.

-The same eyesight drug as given to SPARTAN II's.

*The Office of Naval Intelligence found how to pinpoint exactly what causes some people to react negatively to the SPARTAN enhancements. Therefore, the Spartan III's with the correct genetic makeup, such as NOBLE Team, were given the same enhancements as the Spartan II's, giving them the same traits.

Spartan III's did not have the same level of performance as Spartan II's, and could not use MJOLNIR Armor. However, they were cheap and easy to mass-produce, and had a performance record equal to that of any ODST Unit. Unfortunatly, Spartan III's were considered "expendable" and were often sent on suicide missions to difficult for traditional ODST's and too risky for the expensive Spartan II's. Spartan III's had the highest mortality rate of all three Spartan programs.

No current fiction describes the exact procedures that Spartan IV's were given, however, since they are capable of wearing MJOLNIR Armor, the enhancements must be similar to the Spartan II's enhancements.

MJOLNIR Gen1 and Gen2 differ in a few areas:

-Gen1 has the layer containing the hydrostatic gel directly between the ceramic plating and the user's inside suit. The ceramic plating completely covers the suit. Gen2 has three layers instead of two. The first layer is obviously the part in direct contact with the user's skin. The second layer covers the entire body, and contains the hydrostatic gel. The third layer is consists of the ceramic plating, however the plating does not cover the entire second layer.

Spartan-2s: A bunch of total badasses that can take on a covenant army with a toothpick and win. Very expensive, and with a high rate of deformities. Many came out sociopathic, but most of blue team was about as close to human as possible, they joked, blue team was devastated after Sam died. Very few survivors left.

Spartan-3s: easier to make Spartans with cheaper armor. Fell under army jurisdiction, instead of ONI. Most were sent on tactically vital suicide missions, but some were hand picked to bolster spartan-2 ops. Many Spartans died so that the UNSC would have enough time to prepare for major battles.

Spartan-4s: mostly UNSC ODSTs, they are experienced, and well trained, but not as mechanical and disciplined as the famous twos. They suffer from somewhat of a god complex, as before, they were already elite fighting badasses, but now, they can throw cars. Yeah. They come across as jerks, but when it hits the fan, they will do anything to succeed.

Spartan 2s were kidnapped because of their genetic heritage. And were all augmented surgically. The 3s were all orphans and were given the an opurtunitty for revenge and their augmentations were chemically induced which was why there were so many because there were far less fatalities. The 4s were all consenting adults. I have little knowledge on their augmentations but i do know they take alot of crap from dr. Halsey which is understandable. I dont think any future generation of Spartans will live up to the legacy of the 2s and 3s.

Spartan-II's-Children abducted at the age of 6. Had intense training. Later given augmentations for bones, strength, speed, sight, agility, hearing and reflexes. They had a black body suit, than Mark IV Mjolnir armour, then Mark V Mjolnir armour, then Mark VI Mjolnir armour and a few had Mark VII Mjolnir armour. IMO the best Spartans. Master Chief was one of them. Known as Spartan-117. There was funding for 300 Spartan-II's. It was later reduced to 150 of them. It was reduced once again to 75. Some are still alive. Very disciplined

Spartan III's-Orphans taken and trained by Kurt-051, a Spartan-II, and CPO Mendez, trainer of Spartan-II's. Less extreme augmentations. Used SPI (Semi Powered Infiltration) armour. Some used Mark V armour, such as Noble Team during the fall of reach. (BTW Jorge in Noble Team was a Spartan-II, the other five were Spartan III's). There were more of these spartans but they were "disposable". They were sent on extreme tactical suicide missions and had a 90% chance of death. They weren't as good as the Spartan-II's but were great soldiers. Some are still alive.

Spartan IV's are adults that volunteer to join. They use Mark VII Mjolnir Gen2 armour. They have less severe augmentations and aren't as powerful as Spartan-II'' or Spartan-III's. They aren't as disciplined as the other Spartans. I personally don't like them as much. There are many of them aboard the UNSC Infinity

Spartan I's are just normal augmented humans. It was a failed project. Sgt. Johnson was one of them. That's why he is resistant to the flood and can't be infected.

Mjolnir Gen 2 armour is any model from Mark VII and onward, I think. The suit that master chief has is the first Gen. It looks different in Halo 4 for two reasons.

1) New artwork

2) Whilst Chief was in Cryo sleep, Cortana used nanobots to slightly modify his armour.

Hope this helped

Johnson can't be infected because of a terminal brain disorder (borons syndrome) he developed which scrambles his brain waves. flood infection forms take over bodies by matching the hosts brain wave pattern, which is not possible with Johnson. even if one did manage to get him, it couldnt control him and would most likley die. spartans are still able to be infected.

i believe he got the disorder after being repeatedly exposed to plasma grenade radiation (he captured a supply crate of them, and used them to waste a bunch of covies)

Spartan II's were raised like Legit Greek Spartans, taken from their families as infants so they cannot miss or worry for their family, but only for the Earth and one another and carry out as commanded with a lack of retreat at times.

Spartan III's had a couple Spartan II's (Jorge) and the rest were just like soldiers who signed up for the Marine Corps, but for the Spartan Project.

Spartan IV's, similar to Spartan III's, but not as effective (Seen in Campaign), they're a bit more inexperienced which is not surprising since its the first relived project since 2552.

Borens Syndrome is fake. It was a cover up by ONI so the Spartan Program stays hidden. I know you read that in the book but that's because people don't know about it. He was resistant to being infected because he was augmented.

The Spartan-III's didn't sign up. They were taken as orphans when their parents were killed by the Covenant. They had one thing the Spartan-II's didn't, motivation. They were desperate for revenge.

I prefer the Spartan-II's though. ;)
