Nintendo is so far having a field day as the first next-generation console to hit store shelves. As such, the rumor mills regarding the next-generation successors to Microsoft’s Xbox 360 and Sony’s PlayStation 3 have already started grinding.

However, while many fans hope that either one of these companies release their next consoles sometime next year, a new report suggests that this may not be the case.

SemiAccurate reports that production of chips for the new Xbox (dubbed Xbox Next) have been facing plenty of problems. Supposedly, Microsoft has been spreading out its fabrication orders for this silicon in the hope that its manufacturing partners are able to sort things out in time for launch. However, Redmond may be on its way to missing its schedule for mass production of wafers by the end of the year, going by the report.

Supposedly, the Xbox Next project is named “Kryptos,” and the development kit chip is named “Oban.” Meanwhile, SemiAccurate claims that the next PlayStation has the project name of “Thebes.” It isn’t known if the Kryptos and Thebes names refer to the consoles themselves or just their CPU components. To recall, the name “Durango” has previously been attached to the next-generation Xbox, while “Orbis” is supposedly the reference name for the new PlayStation’s development kits.
