Halo 4 top nominations for the 2013 Streamy Awards

A spin-off from Halo 4 and a YouTube series about the music industry are amongst the web-only shows celebrated in the nominations for the 3rd Streamy Awards.

The nominations for the third Streamy Awards are officially out, and the big winner so far is a YouTube show you might not have even heard of. Don’t worry, though; the second-most nominated webshow is far more recognizable, as Halo 4: Forward Unto Dawn gets its fair share of recognition.

The Streamy Awards launched in 2009 as a result of the non-profit International Academy of Web Television‘s mission to recognize the high points of web-exclusive video content and draw mainstream media attention to said content. Like the Academy Awards, Emmys, and Golden Globes for television and motion pictures, the Streamys feature a multitude of categories to celebrate the contributions of actors, actresses, and directors as well as the less-obvious work behind the scenes. This year, the 36 categories range from Best Direction and Best Actor/Actress to quirkier things like Best Use of Fashion & Design and Best Choreography.

Additionally, the Streamys’ various categories demonstrate the breadth of programming available online, as something as generic as “Best Show” gets split across multiple awards: Best Drama Series, Best Action or Sci-Fi Series, Best Comedy Series, Best Non-Fiction or Reality Series, Best Branded Entertainment Series, Best First-Person Series, Best Derivative Series (as in “spin-off of an existing concept/franchise,” not “most unoriginal”), Best Animated Series, Best DIY or How-To Series, Best Music Series, Best Live Series, Best International Series, Best News and Culture Series and Best Interactive Program. Take that, television.

Or, maybe not. Despite the fact that this year’s Streamys are being described by the IAWT as “the third annual Streamys,” it’s worth pointing out that there wasn’t actually an awards ceremony last year, so it’s not really an annual event.

Regardless, there are still webshows worth honoring. Topping the nominations this year is MyMusic, a YouTube series that pretends to be a documentary about a transmedia production company where staff are referred to by their favorite musical genres instead of name. The show also spun out weekly news reports about actual events in the music industry alongside interviews from real-life music stars. With nine nominations, including Best Comedy Series, Best Direction, and Best Guest Appearance (for Felicia Day), the series beats Halo 4: Forward Unto Dawn by one nomination to take the crown. The video game spin-off garnered eight nominations this year, including Best Action or Sci-Fi Series, Best Writing in a Drama, Best Male Performance in A Drama, and Best Female Performance in A Drama. If only they’d thought to include a Felicia Day appearance in there somewhere, they could have at least tied for the top spot.

The actual, physical awards will be handed out during a ceremony at the Hollywood Palladium in Los Angeles, CA, on February 17, 2013. You can find the full list of nominees here.
