In a report from Eyes on Final Fantasy that was published on Jan. 11, Square Enix talked about the possibility of using the PS4 and Xbox 720 Lumious next-generation game engine for films. Although they have no movies plan right now, the company did mention that they are a “creator-driven company.” You can check out some screens of the Lumious next-generation game engine, as well as some concept images of the PS4 and Xbox 720, in the slideshow at the top of this article and Square Enix’s comments below (courtesy of Eyes on Final Fantasy):

Our focus right now is on games. Can it do more? It can definitely do more. But our focus is on games. There's no Final Fantasy movie in the works that I'm aware of, but the key thing is we're very much a creator-driven company. We want to have the technology to help these creators turn their vision into a reality. And that's why we made this investment.

Square Enix previously released two computer-generated films: “Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within” in 2001 as well as “Final Fantasy VII Advent Children” in 2005. The Lumious engine is designed to support the development of next-generation video games presumably for the PS4 and Xbox 720. Both consoles are expected to be released by the end of this year.
