Dedicated Servers

I've been playing halo since day one, i started taking it seriously in halo 3, and got really good at halo reach. The only problem i had with Halo reach was the reckless amount of lag i was getting. My friend told me that i should open up my NAT type and the lag shouldnt be a problem. Now Halo4 had came out and i just accepted the lag in reach as if it were my fault, so i decided to open my NAT type in Halo4. After one week of going atleast 14-8 in every game i started lagging again and then the lag went from being kicked offline. Now I wouldn't say im a pro, or better than anyone in mlg/agl right now, but i was practicing in order to get to that level, but now everytime i sign on, im getting kicked off or "ddos".

I was wondering why ddosing happened on console gaming and not on computer games, and someone told me that computer games have dedicated servers. DEDICATED SERVERS??? if dedicated servers exist than why hasn't 343 set any up yet? If your consumers are having a problem with your product why arent you (343) doing anything to solve it?

BECAUSE they already have our money and they THINK we will keep buying their product and take all of this bull. (THATS WHAT I THINK, CHANGE MY MIND)

Now i already sold my copy of halo4 but borrowed my friends copy so i could practice for AGL NJ, now thats not happening anymore, because i cant find a team that thinks im not just bitching about being terrible at this game.

Im not saying its because of 343, im saying its cause of the PATHETIC LITTLE noobs THAT DDOS!

ITS A REAL PROBLEM THAT NEEDS TO BE SOLVED OR EVERY TOURNAMENT WILL FEATURE THE SAME TOP 3 TEAMS WINNING AND EVERYONE ELSE REALIZING THEY ARE JUST LOSING MONEY BECAUSE THEY CANT EFFICIENTLY PRACTICE ONLINE WITH THEIR TEAMS.

If 343 wants Halo5 to sell they need to fix this problem fast and setup dedicated servers, and plus...can't this nation use more jobs?

Im not a massive fan of halo 4, but, if they didn't care, they wouldn't release patches or try their best to listen to the community, hence why they're releasing a competitive gametype and a map pack with SMALL maps.

My sentiments exactly. Except I love Halo 4. But, 343 do a good job of listening and giving us what we want.

Some of us just want to start bitching and moaning about the three things they forgot instead of the fifty things they add and fix each update.

343i does listen and gives the fans what they want BUT, they're a little slow at doing so.

ok, forgive me for being wrong..but i think halo does not use dedicated servers..its p2p..thats why sometimes you get host. DDOS or distributed denial of service attack is usually used to take down websites..not games on a console..

Have to say not being a fan of 343's job on Halo 4 they are starting to get a little better, sure they are still full of false promises and are so far behind I wonder if they know which way to look. BUT they are starting to make additions and they seem to be getting some things right.

I dare say they are in a situation where they are still trying to finish the game so making many of the changes poeple have asked for is probably on the long finger for now, but recently they have given me hopw that eventually they may get around to it...

So all in all 343 have improved, but had left themselves in an almost impossible situation for now at least.

I wouldn't exactly say that 343 doesn't exactly care about us only because your connection seems to be falling off a cliff. Halo 4 as a game, is straight up a laggy game, I never lagged so much as when playing Reach or Halo 3. I'm sure their are things that we did not like about the game, but you have to understand that when you create a game, you have the responsibility to appeal to alot of people. And... I'm sure their are quite a few people don't like 343 because of matchmaking... but, let me tell you something. Certain Affinity developed matchmaking... not 343.

The lag is due to the new implimentation of the Azure platform. Azure uses 1 of 4 acceptable methods of data transmition. For Live, they use HTTP exclusively, not P2P. P2P, like the model we had used for Reach, is not supported by Azure. Not to mention that unlike the centralized main servers they had for all previous Halo games, Azure uses Virtual networks via Cloud Computing to distribute and spread all of the data of yuor profiles and matches all across various parts of the world. Doing so, takes more time than before like in Halo 2, 3 or Reach...but also helps because other players you get paired with, have a good chance of geologically being closer to a server, thus minimizing the actual ping and lag of a match for each player.

Also real quick.... Azure is designed by nature, to collectively steal unused rsources in terms of bandwidth from players with great connections, and gives that bandwidth (priority) to players with low connections in an attempt to help "balance" the matches. Or at leats that's what the Azure Whitepaper on the matter tried to explain...I'm just trying to dumb it down a bit..lmao

The whole lag issue is now a side effect of FPS in almost all of these types of games.. One of my mates has 70mb fibre and he gets lag which is a bit odd, I am sure there is something that can be done to help it out as it seems to be the same for me on 8mb copper as it was for him.

I guess its another fix for the company to look at in future.

Also keep in mind that just because YOU have good internet service to your doorstep, does not mean that the same fiber cabling or service quality is the same throughout the world....which is where most of the relay/lag occurs. Case in point, someone in California may have a fantastic 100mb fiber service...but it doesn't mean squat if the host of a game is located somewhere in Somolia, stuck with 35 year old ****ty cable lines that give him 5mb service on a really good day. The Azure network model stretches the experience across datacenters and servers throughout the world. One cannot guarantee perfect quality across the whole world.

^^ Very true but I was always of the impression that the best connection was selected as host, if not any idea why not?? And yes no need to go to somalia lol, my net connection is based on boosted signal down copper lines although I still get a consistent 8mb down.

Now my mates elsewhere have not experienced lag when playing with me so it may be I never get selected as host or that my connection is ample for the job in hand!!

So maybe they need to work on their host selection system, dedicated servers are expensive and at the end of the day the distance from the server you are playing on and the drain on it at the time would have a very similar effect to bad connections.
