Popular Post I_Make_Big_Boom
As the title says, this is an attempt to tackle all the details (or most of them at least) about the Audio for the Master Chief Collection, and of course Halo 2 Anniversary. - - - - - General Game Audio: As mentioned before, the swap from new/old graphics in H2A is near, or is, instantaneous. H2A will have the original music score from Halo 2, and the remastered/new score for H2A. The music will transition with the switch between old and new graphics at the push of a button (what that button is I'm not really sure of. Select?). The H2A Skywalker Sound / Ranch Orchestra (as I'm calling it) Paul Lipson (along with a little bit of Frank and Dan Ayoub), Senior Audio Director for Publishing at 343 Industries, then went on to explain most of the Audio aspects of the MCC at PAX, while previewing some of the songs from the new score (the audio may be a little choppy due to bad video quality): In the original release for Halo 2, Bungie incorporated music from different artists into the score, like Incubus (the Follow songs for example), and Breaking Benjamin (Blow Me Away). 343i is continuing that tradition by including 2 original songs from Misha Mansoor, who is currently a Guitarist for the band Periphery (and they mention he has worked with Animals as Leaders before, but I'm not knowledgeable on that). 1 of the songs is previewed in the above video (it's Metal ). Misha Mansoor performing with Periphery On Ask.fm, Misha was asked some questions relating to the new Audio (I asked him a question and he was kind enough to answer me). I'm going to piece together the questions in some sort of 343i makeshift interview: 343i just announced and previewed your halo song! Sounded great! "Oh sweet, didn't know that was up anywhere! Thanks!" What's the title of your Halo song? "I don't know, actually, they probably have some obscure cue names that make sense to those who have to actually implement the song into the games haha, they were just Song 1 and Song 2 when I was working on them." (My question. Don't laugh at me) I watched the Halo panel at PAX earlier, and my heart skipped when you were mentioned haha. Beautiful song. Anyway I was wondering how 343i approached you about the music, and how the process went? "Brian Trifon, Brian White, and Paul Lipson (the guys overseeing the music for this Halo release) reached out to me asking if I had any interest in writing some music for a video game as they wanted something heavier and more contemporary. I did my very best to try not to freak out hahah." Steve Vai presumably in Skywalker Sound Studios Lipson then announced that Steve Vai is returning to re-make old material for H2A, and from my guess, create some new material as well. A preview of the new MJLONIR Mix is in the video above. Lipson and Frank then both confirmed (partially in the panel, and then in the Q&A) that the new material will only be in the remastered graphics, and the old audio from Halo 2 is being relatively untouched. BUT Halo 2: Anniversary will have an Official Soundtrack with the new songs in it (more details below). Halo 2: Anniversary Soundtrack Paul Lipson went on to announce that Halo 2: Anniversary will have an official soundtrack (just like the Original Soundtrack Pt 1, and 2 from Halo 2). It will release globally the exact day The Master Chief Collection releases (11.11.14), and contains a double-CD. There is also a Limited Edition Vinyl that releases the same day. I'm guessing the 1st CD has the Original Score from Halo 2, and the 2nd CD contains the H2A Score (or vice versa). I could be wrong though. HaloWaypoint will be releasing more information about the Soundtrack at a later date. Weapon Audio / Sound Effects Weapon sound effects re-recording for H2A Lipson mentioned that EVERY sound in the new H2A has been completely re-done. There is also a new "Reflection System" that mimics real-life weapon discharge, and let's the sounds reflect around realistically in the environment that they're in. The H2A Sniper Rifle packs a punch Weapon, and effects sounds can now also be heard over distances, spaces, and around corners. I also want to remind that the new Audio is ONLY in H2A. Halo 2 is being somewhat untouched, and you can play through the original experience with the original audio. Demo of most of the Weapon sound effects: New vs Old - - - - - Well that's it. Thanks for reading! *Halo: The Master Chief Collection releases in North America on 11.11.14, and in Europe on 11.14.14.* - - - - - Thoughts? rrhuntington
I was going to say: "Aww, No Breaking Benjamin'?" But then when I listened I realized that it actually has the same vibe as Blow me away, and I have to say I like it. Going to be cool getting to that part of the game. Also, that environmental shooting, just be forewarned, don't shoot a sniper in a closed in place. It will ring your bell. Good reporting Destruct.
Buns
I am really looking forward to Misha Mansoor's stuff. I have never heard him before but what they showed was so good and I am glad 343i went for that same heavy vibe for Halo 2. It makes me hope we might see similar music like that in Halo 5 Guardians, whICH WOULD BE AMAZING

Blow Me Away (along with all the other audio, including Incubus) is still in H2A. BUT it's in the old graphics pillar. The new graphics pillar is receiving all the new audio, including Misha's stuff. So if you're in a mission with original graphics on, and Incubus is playing in the background, you can immediately switch with that button to new graphics and the song is replaced by the new audio by Misha. You can still go back to original graphics and listen to the old audio. Oh and thanks!
Zaguroth
Music sounds amazing o_o The guns all sound amazing too, saw some people saying they didn't sound right. Also, what's this about environmental shooting?

Also, what's this about environmental shooting? It's just there to make the sound effects more realistic. Like reverberation, and echoes and all that. You can hear in the updated audio that the Weapon Discharge kind of spreads around the environment and fades out.

BeckoningZebra1
Great post SD, that's an incredible amount of info provided above. I really like the way the new music and shooting audio sounds. I can't wait to play with them!

Lol I don't think 343i expects people to sit there toggling the audio back and forth because of how horrible it would sound. They would probably get a headache or something doing that nonstop. Hopefully 343i ends up putting in something to keep that from happening.
Cooliest
What map is that in the weapon testing, remastered multiplayer map or a campaign mission? Well anyways, great find on the video and my personal favorite change hearing them compared like that is definitely the sniper rifle.

I probably should have put "This is Campaign" up there. Oh and thanks! Yeah that Sniper... gawd it's amazing

Axilus Prime
Those sound effects are amazing, especially the Plasma Pistol and Rocket Launcher.
DarthWeasel
Is there an option to turn the new sound effects off while still playing on the new graphics? I find the new sound effects sound jarringly out of place in halo with few exceptions. For example the pistol or SMG sounds sound like they belong in CoD not Halo and the plasma weapon sounds are really quiet and have no feel of impact. Same thing with the melee sounds which also have a noticeable pause between when you impact and when the sound is played.

No. New sound effects will stay with the new Graphics, and old sound effects will stay with the old graphics.
B3ta R13
The only problem i have is the amount of unreleased music in the soundtrack disks. I hope to god they do a Vol.2 like the original.
Ash
The new sounds are great They sound more like weapons, and I like that they're getting away from the old sounds.
