What's in store for us at Microsoft's Spring Showcase?

Last Updated: 29th Feb 2012

Ignoring the numb ears, marvelling at the stunning views of the Arctic Tundra, and the odd screaming child, we sit on a plane headed for sunnier climes, in California's San Francisco. As invited guests of Microsoft there's much to be excited for given the fact it has been several years since Microsoft invited webmasters from all over Europe to the USA to witness its wares. The last time we can recall was during those fledgling days of Zero Hour in Los Angeles for the launch of the now rather old Xbox 360 console. So, it's interesting as to why Microsoft is rolling out the carpet for us Europeans this time.

We've already speculated that potentially - behind closed doors - there could be some sort of reveal pertaining to Microsoft's strategy or "vision" for the Next Generation Xbox, and despite there being denials all round. Microsoft's own event, Pre Game Developers Conference, Pre E3, is a perfect place to spill a few beans, not all, but some to get the juices flowing. We don't expect a full blown new console announcement just yet, but something no matter how trivial or small would certainly send the hype machine into overdrive.

Aside from the future of hardware though, there's no doubt Microsoft's Spring Showcase is going to be about the games. Much has been said about Microsoft's lack of first party exclusives since the tail end of last year, and although we've just had the enjoyable Alan Wake's American Nightmare land on our laps, some new stuff would be welcomed.

Speculation has already begun as to whether the mighty Halo 4 will feature, and given its end of 2012 release window, it's likely for the first time we'll be able to see the game in action, and possibly give it some playtime. Lionhead's Fable: The Journey is likely to have undergone several changes since its inception and showcase last year, and so we expect to see a revised version of that on the show floor. No doubt Kinect Star Wars will be in full effect, and we're hoping the tech heads at the event have it all set up for the Kinect, 3D combo. With Microsoft's continued partnership with Activision, we've got a hunch that Black Ops 2 might very well be featured in some way, maybe not playable, but a new video at least. Mass Effect 3 will be releasing the moment we return back to old blighty, but we wouldn't be surprised if already an announcement for exclusive downloadable content is uttered to all present. Aside from a slew of other games that might feature from its third parties we're hoping some more is revealed about stuff we didn't know. A new kinect game or two, possibly a new franchise in the making and no doubt a ton of digital download releases exclusive to the Xbox.

Being well aware of what Microsoft has up its sleeve for this year for Xbox, there's some hope that the unknown will reveal its head and present to us something more to take away from the two day event that really blows our socks off. No doubt our socks will already be basking in the Californian sunshine with whatever they have planned, but something that silences the naysayers, quietens the critics, and stokes the fires of the fanboyism is what dreams are made of and hopefully will give us plenty to talk about on the sullen and laborious ten and half hour flight home.

In addition, for those who are unaware, this is a complete denial from 343 Studios of a November 21st release date of Halo 4.

No November 21st release date

Microsoft says that a would-be cinematic effects reel that has been making the rounds as “leaked” is a fake. In addition, Microsoft also claims that the news that this reel reveals a November 21st, 2012 launch date is likewise false.

The video claims to be a collection of special effects and does seem to make a number of Halo references. There is no Master Chief or other recognizable Halo characters or places in the video, from what we can tell. While the style is similar to the E3 Halo 4 teaser, that is about all we can say.

Sources have whispered to us that we should expect Halo 4 to be unveiled prior to E3 at the upcoming Xbox Spring Showcase Event that starts this week. Of course, this is only a rumor, but Microsoft has confirmed that you should stay tuned for more Halo 4 information; however, they don’t give any clue as to when it might be coming.

Here is a screenshot of the "fake" video release date.

On the lighter side....Frank O'Connor and Brian Jarrard, concerned for information being leaked from the "XBOX 360 Spring Showcase 2012", have decided to take security matters into their own hands!

This is a parody and should not be taken seriously!

hmm Franks holding a Battle Rifle?????

Oh I hope it returns

That is an old photo intended to show their "tough stance on security", not the weapons of Halo 4. Sorry!

Aww, I was just about to say "Could it be a message saying the return of the BR in Halo 4 :o" But, now my hopes are down ;)
