Spectral Jester
According to that good old rumour mill, Microsoft has been telling partners that its next Xbox won't have a disc drive. Apparently, the console could instead be compatible with some form of interchangeable solid-state storage, but discs and other physical media reportedly won't be supported. Word of a 2013 launch has also been doing the rounds again, making the possibility of an E3 2012 reveal all the more likely if it proves to be true. We can't imagine that the omission of a disc drive for the next-generation Xbox will go down too well though, especially for gamers hoping for backwards compatibility. Microsoft issued a statement to MCV in response to the rumours, which as you'd expect, sheds no light on them whatsoever. “Xbox 360 has found new ways to extend its lifecycle like introducing the world to controller-free experiences with Kinect and re-inventing the console with a new dashboard and new entertainment content partnerships," reads the statement. "We are always thinking about what is next for our platform and how to continue to defy the lifecycle convention. Beyond that we do not comment on rumours or speculation.”
Anonymousnorris
It could be neat to use something like a USB drive, it's more resistant against damage(no more scratching), although that would mean that Xbox 360 discs AND DVDs wouldn't be compatible. I don't think they would get rid of being able to play movies(unless they really are that money hungry).
Twinreaper
I think this one is purely designed to freak people out. The 360 is not going to be drive-less. They have already made elusive comments towards the fact that the new console will be supporting blu-ray. They have also made comments about the new box not supporting previous game titles. Now that could be looked at the way this rumor goes. No optical drive means no previous gen games will work. I dont see Microsoft taking optical drives out of the equation anytime soon. I could only imagine the horror that would come out of using solid state tech to distribute games. The amount of encryption creation time for something like that would be very expensive, and very expensive to duplicate in manufacturing. New games come out in the new form; but if people choose to play the 360 games, they can.
Lᴜᴋᴇ
I don't know, I think they could lose a hell of a lot of customers if they got rid of disk drives, and so the ability to play old xbox games. I would certainly be annoyed. I knew microsoft where Money grabbers but if they forced everyone to re-buy games in new formats then..... Unless they offered free downloads if you have that game in your download history, for example.
Mr. DJ
i highly dout this. it would have to have a disc drive to play DVDs and stuff, so, while this might happen in the future, i don't think it will be with the x-box
Archangel Tyrael
Well i don't think this rumour is true, if it is true then. I will be very upset, because if microsoft is that money hungry then idk what to say. this will kill buisnsses, make a lot of people pissed, lots of things. Absolute Dog
What if the next generation of games exist in a format other than disk. The disk technology is very dated and new game and media storage devices devices may be on the way. Could there be a peripheral unit made available for disk driven items that would cover the play of previous games.
Lᴜᴋᴇ
a peripheral unit made available for disk driven items that would cover the play of previous games. That would be good actually, but no doubt microsoft would charge extortionate amounts as per their usual policy.
Minuette
This will make games 20% more expensive if they were USB instead of disks
Quantum
I don't like the removal of the disk idea. Hopefully they won't. But if the dark side of the moon suddenly burst into flames and they DID, they should atleast make a way to download all previous bought games to your system for free.
