How deep of a moat do I need to drown them? Unless you make the moat with lava, then you aren't going to kill them and it's a bad idea to try. All mobs can swim. The ditch idea gives you a chance to kill them with arrows and whatnot and then just pick the loot up. The lava eats loot however.
