Max Payne 3 tells the story of a retired police detective embroiled in a world of corruption, turmoil and intense violence. Max Payne is ahard-boiled New York City detective with a penchant for violence, out to avenge the death of his family. Since leaving the NYPD and New York itself behind, Max has drifted from bad to worse. Double-crossed and a long way from home, Max is now trapped in a city full of violence and bloodshed, using his weapons and instincts in a desperate search for the truth and a way out.Max Payne 3 delivers more of the classic elements and hyper-intense action that fans have come to love.

Max Payne 3's new engine lets you see the effort Max's making and his realistic reactions mean that things that should hurt look like they hurt. so if your diving through the air you'll be able to see the look of pain in Max's face as he make contact with the ground and slides across the floor. You'll see him reach for objects as he dives over them or brace for impact from the ground or a wall. In general, this is adds to the level of realism within the game, but with time slowed down, every detail counts. Every bullet, every time Max fluidly rolls while picking up a new weapon, every shoot dodge looks great and feels like a natural, integrated part of the game and the character.

Bullet time

Bullet time in Max Payne 3 has several uses, the first is strategic, enemies simply aren't gonna let you walk over them in real time but in bullet time it allows you to take them out with precise fluid movements. another use of bullet time is to increase the cinematic nature of the game, bullet time turns chaotic gun fights into a beautful dance of bullets and violence, environments are designed to shatter, splinter and explode in glorious detail thanks to the use of environmental physics and particle effects. Bullet Time is also incorporated into areas of the environment, so that entering an area will automatically trigger Bullet Time, both to give you some assistance at taking down a group of bad guys, but also to make for an epic, cinematic set piece.

Last man standing

Last Man Standing is to give players a chance to recover from a fatal shot. If Max takes a fatal blow while he's carrying at least one painkiller, he'll automatically enter Bullet Time, and the reticule swings back to towards the enemy who shot Max. If Max can kill that enemy before hitting the deck, he'll get a portion of health back at the cost of one painkiller. It's not the most efficient use of painkillers so it's not something to be relied upon at all times, but it can get you out of a tough spot. It's our way of always giving players a fighting chance and to constantly keep them in the action, even on the precipice of death

Multiplayer

With Max Payne 3, Rockstar is attempting to weave strong narrative sensibilities beyond the single-player campaign and into the fabric of the game's multiplayer experience. So often multiplayer is seen as beyond the reach of the writer, a forum in which players shape their own private narratives. But through modes like Gang Wars,Rockstar isn't trying to intrude a narrative upon players having fun with friends; they're trying to advance what people expect from a multiplayer experience: "Ideally it will evolve into something that's both a place for emergent gameplay and for game makers, including writers, animators and designers, to provide some context and structure for that gameplay to make it even more compelling," Dan Houser, co-founder of Rockstar admits. "Even in a single-player game, we're not trying to serve the needs of the story so much as make a story that works to make the action more exciting and compelling. And the same is true of multiplayer, or at least, we think it should be."

And when it comes to multiplayer, Houser believes that no one else is really going that extra mile in storytelling. "Multiplayer, particularly in competitive first-person shooters, has almost completely forsaken any kind of story or attachment to character," he says. "We wanted to keep the sense of competition that comes from multiplayer but we wanted to bring back a better sense of character, rather than just being a faceless member of an army, and that was one of the inspirations for Gang Wars. Players can feel attached to their character as an individual, but also feel tied into the universe of the single-player game. Every round of Gang Wars tells you a little more about the world around Max's story – either what the city's factions were doing before Max arrived, or what happened after the events of the single-player game."

Rockstar is attempting to make the online multiplayer experience a much more welcoming proposition for the inexperienced, without alienating the seasoned player. "With Max Payne 3 we absolutely wanted to make a more competitive experience that lives up to the requirements of a pure shooter with as much as possible customisable, persistent and trackable, but also to make it easy for people to jump in and feel comfortable quickly so that the environment is fun for the less competitive as well as for serious players. Jumping into online matches and making friends isn't easy – often if you're not already playing with friends the entire process can be fairly intimidating, especially in competitive matches."
