The Elder Scrolls Online was announced earlier this morning, and while Bethesda was scant with the details of the game, we do know that it will be an MMO for PC and Mac featuring three factions, and it's due out in 2013. The Elder Scrolls Online will take place a thousand years before the events of Skyrim. We don't know anything about the gameplay mechanics or the factions, but we do know that the main villain in the game is a daedric prince named Molag Bal. You can see him, in statue form, above. Just who is this evil creature, and how might he figure into The Elder Scrolls Online? I dug into Elder Scrollslore (via The Elder Scrolls Wiki) and have put together a dossier on Molag Bal.

BIOGRAPHY OF MOLAG BAL

In Elder Scrolls lore, Molag Bal is the Daedric Prince of domination and enslavement of mortals. He's also known as the master of corruption and the King of Rape. His greatest desire is to "harvest the souls of mortals and to bring mortals souls within his sway by spreading seeds of strife and discord in the mortal realms." Sounds like a great guy. Look for attempts to bring MMO players into his evil realm... when they're not fighting among themselves, of course.

Bal is also known as the father of Vampires. Does this mean the new game will feature a large, blood-sucking population? We can only hope.

Covrered in scales, Bal looks like a cross between a monkey and a snake. He/She/It (Daedra don't have genders, per se) has horns, claws and a long tail.

"Men would come and sacrifice the wretched in my name. The weak would be punished by the strong."

HISTORY AND LORE (Source: Elder Scrolls Wiki)

Morrowind

In Morrowind, Bal is the main source of the obstacles to the Dunmer and Chimer people. In keeping with the corruption theme, Molag Bal tries to upset the bloodlines of Houses and otherwise ruin Dunmeri purity. That's where the whole "God of Rape" thing comes in. Bal is said to be the father (along with Vivec, whom he seduced) of a population of mutants living in the Molag Amur region of Morrowind. This race may have been the first vampires.

First Era

Way back in the first era, Molag Bal destroyed the city of Gilverdale and killed all its residents. The Daedric massacre forced Sotha Sil to make a journey to Coldharbour (realm of Bal) to make sure other cities didn't fall.

Champion of Cyrodil

Molag Bal was summoned by the Champion of Cyrodiil. He wished for the champion to corrupt Melus Petilius, by forcing him to kill with the Cursed Mace of Molag Bal. The champion was able to enrage Petilius and this made him grab the Cursed Mace and used it to kill the champion. Right before the final blow, Molag Bal transported the champion back to his shrine, job well done.

Fourth Era

During the Fourth Era, also known as Skyrim's time, Bal makes a small, but pivotal appearance (for cool mace fans, anyway.) Remember that creepy quest in that house in Markareth? When you had to kill an innocent priest in tribute to a Daedra? That Daedra is Molag Bal.

Molag Bal is probably best known for his mace. That's it above, from Skyrim. The Mace of Molag Bal appears in four Elder Scrolls games: Daggerfall, Morrowind, Oblivion and Skyrim.
