To celebrate its 10th anniversary, 4A Games is letting anyone snag its seminal sequel, Metro: Last Light, for free on Steam between May 18-25. Once you add the game to your Steam library, it's yours to keep.

Metro: Last Light directly follows the game series' debut, Metro 2033, continuing the story of Artyom and his fight for survival in the harrowing tunnels beneath a post-apocalyptic Russian metropolis. The sequel honed the mechanics of the first, retaining the tough-as-nails first-person action while improving it with polished gunplay and less-obscure mechanics. It's a game that looked fantastic when it launched and will still turn heads today.

If you've never had the chance to enjoy Metro: Last Light or have just let it slip into your backlog for over a decade, you can make up for that by playing one of the best shooters of the last generation for free on Steam.

Metro: Exodus, which launched in 2019, is the most recent entry in the series, with developer 4A Games reportedly working on a sequel. The author of the book series that the games adapt (who is also currently a wanted man in Russia for speaking out against the war in Ukraine) confirmed in 2019 that a sequel to Exodus was in development. A report earlier this year suggested that this fourth game entry is progressing well and could potentially be revealed this year.

Back in 2013, we awarded a 9/10 to 4A Games' sequel in our Metro: Last Light review, saying, "Last Light is notably superior to its predecessor, merging storytelling, shooting, and sneaking into a remarkable and cohesive whole."
