Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick has briefly commented on the possibility of a new mid-generation console refresh, saying that it's "likely" that updated PS5 and Xbox Series X|S consoles will be released.

"We probably will," Zelnick said to GamesIndustry.Biz, while adding that the previous generation of upgraded consoles "did not affect the business very much" and that Take-Two will continue to support last-gen hardware. With a newer Nintendo console rumored to be released next year, Zelnick says that the company will also continue to support that console. "Yes, I think we'll continue to support it," he said.

The current generation of console gaming is now over two years old, as both the Xbox Series X|S and PS5 were introduced in November 2020. In comparison, the Xbox One saw a mid-generation refresh in the form of the Xbox One X in 2017, four years after it launched, and the PS4 Pro was released three years after the launch of the PS4.

Both consoles focused on providing native 4K gaming experiences, and also saw the rise of performance and quality modes that prioritized frame-rates or resolutions, respectively. Most of the time, it was either one or the other, and current-gen consoles have also begun to offer more limited graphical options for new games. Titles such as Gotham Knights are only playable at 4K and 30fps on console and Redfall's 60fps mode will only arrive in a future update.

There are a number of reasons as to why fewer new console games are capable of hitting the 4K 60fps benchmark, and as Digital Foundry has explained, the return of 30fps games is inevitable in this current console generation. It's worth noting that Sony filed a patent application for a new disc drive in April, fueling rumors that a PS5 with a removable disc drive is in development.

As for Take-Two, it's expecting to have a very profitable 2025 fiscal year, as the company has suggested that GTA 6 will launch next year and will help it bring in an absurd amount of cash.
