New firmware updates are now available for PS5 and PS4 consoles, and according to the patch notes, these new patches add more--surprise!--system stability to both consoles. "This system software update improves system performance," the very brief 10.70 (PS4) and 23.01-07.60.00 (PS5) update notes read.

Sony's last major update for the PS5 was back in March, when Discord integration, VRR support at 1440p resolution, and several smaller quality-of-life features were added to the system. Since then, the console has gotten the usual system stability updates and it's not known yet what the next big update will contain for the PS5.

In comparison, the PS4 has seen a slowdown in firmware updates since the PS5 arrived on the scene. October 2020 brought changes to existing Party and Message features in the 8.0 update, April 2021's 8.50 update enabled cross-play between the PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5, and September 2021's 9.0 update fixed a major issue that would prevent PS4 Pro consoles from being able to play games. Since then, Sony released four updates throughout 2021, a single update in 2022, and so far, just one update in 2023 for the PS4.

This year has been a good one for Sony, as after facing stock shortages through the early years of the PS5 lifecycle, the console is now selling extremely well. The system shipped another 6.3 million units during the January-March period to push total PS5 sales to 38.4 million as of April 28. Sony will also launch the PS5 Access Controller in December, and preorders will begin on July 21 for the $90 peripheral.
