Things are getting spooky in Destiny 2, as Season of the Witch kicks off this week. Season 22 revolves around Eris Morn making a deal with Savathun's Ghost Immaru to resurrect the Witch Queen and defeat her sister, Xivu Arath. In exchange, Savathun will reveal the key to the portal through the Traveler so that Guardians can finally travel through it and confront the Witness.

The new matchmade activities this season will be Altars of Summoning and Savathun's Spire. Altars of Summoning will see Guardians present offerings in the Witch Queen’s otherworldly prison to summon foes and claim their power, which can be accessed by powering up Svathun's Spire.

Another new gameplay system being introduced in Season of the Witch is the Deck of Whispers, a collection of cards that can be collected throughout the season and offer several rewards and enhancements.

For the armor, Season 22's hot fashion statement is a collection of "thaumaturgic threads imbued with the strength of eons" and seasonal ornaments that turn your gear into a creepy garden of overgrown plants. Fans of Hive weapons can unlock Ex Diris, an Exotic grenade launcher similar to the one wielded by Lucent Hive knights, and several other rewards will be available in the free and premium tiers of the season pass.

As usual, Bungie has kept details on Season 22 under tight wraps, waiting right until the end of Season 21 to reveal what's next for its sci-fi sandbox. Now that Season of Defiance and Season of the Deep have wrapped up the Lightfall expansion's remaining plot threads, the next six months will see Destiny 2 prepared for its final expansion in the Light and Darkness saga, The Final Shape, and beyond that expansion, Bungie will replace its seasons with new episodic content that are designed to be standalone adventures.

Destiny 2: Season of the Witch

Season 21 ended on a major cliffhanger, one in which the Vanguard and its allies agreed to a dangerous new plan to allow Savathun, The Witch Queen of the Hive, to be resurrected.

Beyond the new story elements being introduced this season, Destiny 2 will undergo a number of technical changes as well. Big changes are in store for several legacy Exotic armor pieces and Exotic weapons, PvP players can expect a chunk of new content ahead of bigger drops in 2024, a key Strand ability is getting nerfed, and there'll be easier ability unlocks for the Stasis subclass this season as well.
